An interactive public art installation in the underutilized Mid-Market Street corridor will create a fun and engaging way to get people actively participating in the community.
ChimeSF is a temporary, interactive public art installation designed to celebrate our diverse community in San Francisco’s downtown Market Street. ChimeSF celebrates rebirth of the historically arts-rich Mid-Market Street corridor. The installation uses music to form a vibrant sense of community. Post-consumer recycled materials for construction represent sustainability and wellness.
The ChimeSF installation is a wall of interlocking metal keys that resonate and create music from being drummed or tapped. Different keys produce different tones; together they form a harmonious song. The sound will remain at a level (<50 dBA at a distance of 10’) that allows conversations any time of day or night. The space between the keys is empty, allowing for clear visibility to the other side. This see-through aspect allows greater interaction and minimizes safety concerns.
The structure will be built using either aluminum or stainless steel, with a reinforced concrete base. The wall is 6 feet tall, 8 feet wide, and 18 inches deep. The large size allows for group performances and interaction. It also accommodates children and provides ease of access for those in wheelchairs.
At night, ChimeSF will be colorfully lit with solar powered LED lights. Sensors will detect visitors’ movements, and animate LED lights to add a magical touch to the experience. The lighting patterns transform: creating a vibrant, active, and inviting visual performance for the surrounding area.
The main objectives of ChimeSF are: (1) to leverage music making as an engaging, entertaining way to promote physical activity, (2) to create a fluid and unifying environment where visitors are as much a part of our installation as the physical structure is, and (3) to create a visually-appealing interactive soft scape improvement, which serves as a nexus for place-making and community building.
ChimeSF will provide a powerful open forum for cultural discourse, promoting awareness in the public sphere of issues normally restricted to the private. Our installation will create a gathering place to express a common culture and shared sense of meaning. ChimeSF encourages passersby to linger, socialize, and engage in a fun activity, while simultaneously connecting with Mid-Market’s emerging arts and technology communities.
The ChimeSF team has taken a grassroots approach to our project. Through sharing our ideas with the San Francisco organizations of which we are a part, we have formulated the design of ChimeSF, as you see it. Our team made visits to the proposed areas, taking time to observe the people, sounds, buildings, and interactions that took place around us. Through the development process, we will continue to maintain a dialogue with our community members and to respond to community needs.
The ChimeSF team is also planning to promote community engagement through a variety of creative online tools, including, social networking technology including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and ello. Along with these social networking tools, we will be directing community stakeholders to our website chimesf.com. At chimesf.com, community stakeholders can provide genuine feedback through online surveys. The ChimeSF team is committed to making participation and the development of our interactive public art installation equitable and socially responsible.
